Indiana Women's Prison - Day Camp/On-Site Training, June, 2004

The IWP Day Camp, produced again by Humanity in Unity, featured The Wizard of Oz as this year's theme. MPM was happy to participate for the entire week, both in the Day Camp and also hosting one of its own programs.

Sai Ma singin in prisonSai Ma sings to the inmates and their children. Her message of Peace is very comforting to all.

Running alongside the Day Camp was a weeklong On-Site Training program administered by Teachers from Miracles Prisoner Ministry. Many teachers worked at the Day Camp and also taught in the classroom during the week.

Over 50 women signed up for the 12-Step Spiritual Recovery Class, which was held for 5 days.  At the end of the class, upon 'graduation', certificates were handed out by Superintendent Warden Dana Blank, to those inmates completing the intensive. There were many tears, much joy and true healing.

Each child and their mother joined their hands together and made a plaster cast of their hands.  These were then painted by both of them. The children took the joined hands home with them, so they would know that they are always together.

Women inmates enjoy participating in MPM classroom.

As MPM teachers know, these classes are as much for them, as for the inmates. Everyone grows and learns. Thank you to all who participated.

One evening was spent with a class of emotionally disturbed inmates (or criminally insane). Dr. Steven Howard (MPM Church President) and his wife, Clare, worked with the women for 3 hours.  The purpose was to open communication, where possible, and to reach out to each inmate personally, even if only for a night.

Taking a moment to enjoy each other's company! Thank you to IWP staff, who made our visit possible and incredible! Names: Rev. Michael, Superintendent Dana Blank, Rev. Philly, Steve Sutton, Rev. Cybil, and Helena Osak.

Image Over 75 children and their mothers/Grandmothers, who are incarcerated, attended the Day Camp.  IWP inmates and staff constructed the decorations and settings.  There was even a mini-swimming pool for the children. The camp is one of the most powerful building blocks in supporting families, healing the bond between mother and child, reducing recidivism and breaking the cycle of generational incarceration.  The camp is sponsored by the prison staff, community volunteers, offender workers, and organizations such as Humanity in Unity, MPM and others.  Sai Ma visited the women also.  She is one of their favorite guest speakers!

Sai Ma activates the Labyrinth at the Indiana Women's Prison

Image On April 23rd, 2004, Chalanda Sai Ma visited the Indiana Women's Prison in Indianapolis to view the newly completed labyrinth that was built by the inmates of the prison and sponsored by Humanity In Unity. At the opening of the labyrinth is a "Quiet Stone," a black granite circle with Sai Ma's flower of life logo etched into the stone and the words "Humanity In Unity." As Sai Ma stood before the stone, she said that anyone who steps on this stone will experience peace. Around 40 of Sai Ma's guests accompanied Her, as well as ministers from the Miracles Prisoner Ministry. Those who walked the Labyrinth were astounded by the power and the effect it had in creating peace in the mind and an overall sense of well-being.

MPM was happy to be present at the dedication. Rev.'s Michael, Mariah and Darla participated in the afternoon the women's prison. MPM will be visiting Indiana Women's prison this summer and offering a week long intensive !
